Becoming a CNC machinist is one of the best careers you could pursue in the manufacturing industry. It’s a promising position that will always be needed. But becoming one can often pose a challenge, especially when you’re not entirely sure what you need to do to become one. But don’t worry, GL Staffing has been providing its exemplary staffing services for many years in order to employ machinists for clients. We know exactly what it takes to become a CNC machinist and we can help you by informing yourself of the requirements listed below.

What is a CNC Machinist?

Before you learn what it takes to become a CNC machinist, it’s important that you know what one is and what they do.

A CNC Machinist (or operator) is responsible for producing machined parts by programming, setting up, and even operating a computer numerical control (CNC). They help to maintain the equipment of a manufacturing facility while adhering to quality and safety standards as well as keeping detailed records.

The role of a CNC Machinist is a multi-faceted one. While they generally carry out the aforementioned responsibilities, their specific duties involve:

  • Working from blueprints, sketches, and/or even computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) files.
  • Setting up, operating, and dissembling manual, automatic, and CNC machine tools.
  • Aligning, securing, and adjusting cutting tools and workpieces.
  • Monitoring and feeding the speed of the machines.
  • Turning, milling, drilling, shaping, and grinding machine parts to specifications.
  • Measuring, examining, and testing completed products for any defects.
  • Smoothing the surfaces of parts or products.
  • Presenting finished pieces to customers and adjust for modifications if required.

How to Become a CNC Machinist

There isn’t just a single way to become a CNC machinist. In fact, there are many.

Machinists are able to train through a wide selection of apprenticeship programs, vocational schools, community or technical colleges, or even while simply on the job. In order to qualify as a good CNC machinist, good math and problem-solving skills, as well as familiarity with computer software, is important. Also, a high school diploma or something equivalent is necessary.

Any coursework you take in advanced math, technical drafting, metalworking, machine tooling, and computer programming will help to prepare you as a CNC machinist.

Training

If you’re lucky enough, the manufacturing facility you end up working for will offer on-site training with absolutely no previous experience required. Some other employers, however, will require a specified length of time to work in similar environments before you enter a training program. The training you undergo could be part of a new employee orientation and is often paid. Basic training for a CNC machinist can take a few days to a week and can even include shadowing current operators and/or performing duties under supervision.

Certifications

Certification training and programs exist for both fairly-experienced and interested parties. Such certification programs include:

  • Certified CNC Setup Programmer
  • Fundamentals of Metal Fabrication Certification
  • Precision Sheet Metal Operator (PSMO)
